Set Goals instead of New Year’s Resolutions!
January always seems to show up in a rush, and before we know it, February is already around the corner. Along with the New Year comes the familiar list of promises:
- “This year I’ll lose weight.”
- “I’ll finally get organized.”
- “I’ll save more money.”
But here’s the truth: studies show that 92% of resolutions are forgotten before Easter. It’s not because we don’t care or we aren’t capable. It’s because most resolutions are built on shaky ground.
So, why do New Year’s resolutions fail? And more importantly, what can we do differently in 2025?
Why Resolutions Don’t Stick
Think about it! Every January, gyms are packed, planners are filled, and motivation feels high. But by February, things usually slide back to normal.
The reason isn’t laziness or lack of discipline. It’s because resolutions are usually vague and disconnected from our deeper values. They’re more like wishes than commitments.
For example:
- “I’ll eat healthier” sounds nice, but what does it actually mean?
- “I’ll save money” feels good, but without a plan, it fades quickly.
This is why I encourage my clients, and myself, to stop making resolutions and start setting goals instead.
Resolutions vs. Goals: Why the Shift Matters
Here’s the difference:
- Resolutions are often about what we should do. They’re vague, external, and reactive.
- Goals are about what we choose to do. They’re specific, measurable, and tied to a bigger vision.
In coaching and in my work with Family Constellations, I’ve seen how powerful goals can be when they’re aligned with our inner values. They’re not just tasks. They’re energy in motion.
Here are five reasons people struggle with resolutions but thrive with goals:
- Lack of clarity – They know what they don’t want, but can’t define what they truly want.
- Comfort zone – It feels safer to stay where we are than to take consistent steps forward.
- Doubt – They don’t believe change is really possible.
- Fear – Fear of failure (or even success) can be paralyzing.
- Instant gratification – We live in a world of quick fixes, but real growth takes time.
The Energy Behind Goal-Setting
If you’ve been following my work, you know I believe that everything begins with energy and intention.
Resolutions are often made impulsively after a holiday sugar rush, a burst of guilt, or pressure from others. But goals require you to pause, reflect, and align your energy with what truly matters.
When your goals are grounded in your values, you naturally attract the motivation, support, and clarity to follow through.
How to Turn Resolutions Into Lasting Growth
Here are five strategies that I share with my clients and practice myself:
- Get Specific → Instead of “I’ll get healthy,” try: “I’ll walk 20 minutes three times a week.”
- Break It Down → Big goals feel overwhelming. Break them into small, doable steps.
- Stay Flexible → Life happens. Adjust the path, not the vision.
- Align with Your Values → Choose goals that actually matter to you, not just what society expects.
- Seek Support → Share your goals with a coach, a friend, or even your family. Accountability makes a difference.
Moving Forward: Setting Your GPS
As January fades, ask yourself: Are your resolutions already slipping away? If so, it’s not too late. You don’t need to wait until next year to try again.
Think of it like driving. You wouldn’t set off without a destination, right? Your goals are your GPS. They give you direction, clarity, and momentum.
So, this year, instead of chasing resolutions, let’s create purposeful goals that reflect your vision and values. That’s how you build sustainable growth, not just for a season, but for a lifetime.
