Defying Gravity, Embracing Self, and Shedding Limitations

“Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game…”

These opening lines from Defying Gravity in the Broadway musical Wicked have a way of sticking with you. They speak to anyone who has ever felt trapped by expectations, family rules, or invisible weights holding them back.

I still remember the first time I saw Wicked in London. It instantly became one of my favorite shows. Even now, I find myself singing Defying Gravity in the car (loudly, if I’m alone!). But beyond the music, the story carries a message that connects deeply with the work I do in Family Constellation® therapy.

Trusting Your Own Transformation

In Wicked, Elphaba, the “Wicked Witch”, decides she can no longer live by the rules others set for her. She’s afraid of losing love and approval, but realizes the cost of denying herself is far greater.

She sings, “I’m through accepting limits ‘cause someone says they’re so. Some things I cannot change, but ‘til I try, I’ll never know.”

This mirrors what happens for so many of us in life. We carry invisible anchors, family patterns, generational wounds, and unspoken rules that quietly shape the way we live. Out of loyalty, or fear of being rejected, we stay small. We silence our voice. We trade freedom for belonging.

But at some point, we reach a choice: continue living by inherited limits, or take the leap into our own authentic path.

The Love We Crave

One of Elphaba’s most powerful lines is, “Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love, I guess I’ve lost. Well, if that’s love, it comes at much too high a cost.”

This hits at the heart of conditional love. Love that comes with strings attached. Many of us grow up believing we have to act a certain way, achieve certain things, or even sacrifice our own truth just to stay connected and loved by family.

But what is the cost of that love if it keeps us from being fully ourselves?

That is the quiet pain so many of my clients bring to Family Constellation® sessions. They long for freedom, but also fear losing love. They want to belong, but also want to breathe.

How Family Constellation Helps You “Defy Gravity”

In Family Constellation® work, we gently uncover the hidden patterns and unconscious loyalties that keep people stuck. Sometimes it’s inherited trauma from previous generations. Sometimes it’s a family “rule” that no one ever spoke aloud, but everyone silently followed.

Through this process, people begin to see clearly what is theirs to carry and what they can finally set down. They realize they don’t have to repeat old cycles or live under invisible contracts.

This is the moment of “defying gravity.” It’s the choice to rise above limiting beliefs, to trust your instincts, and to claim the freedom to live as your authentic self.

When we release those anchors, we can fly higher than we ever thought possible.
